Shopify Now Lets You Stack Discounts on the Same Item

Shopify now lets you stack multiple discounts on the same item. How discount tags work, why 40% plus 10% is only 46% off, and how to protect margin and MAP.

Shopify merchants can finally stack multiple discounts on the same item. Shopify shipped the update on July 15, and it fills the biggest gap left by the Scripts shutdown: layering discounts on a single line item without writing any code. Here's how it works, and where it can quietly eat your margin.

How discount tag stacking works

You can now assign tags to your discounts, things like loyalty, seasonal, or VIP, and then configure which tagged groups are allowed to combine. Compatible discounts apply automatically at checkout, no code required. Shopify announced the underlying API to developers on April 30, and the July release puts the controls in the admin.

Same-item stacking showed up on Plus first. If you don't see tagging options in your discount settings yet, check availability on your plan. And if you spent the last year fighting the old combination rules with shipping-plus-product workarounds, this is the native replacement.

The math is linear, not additive

A 40% sale plus a 10% VIP code is not 50% off. The second discount applies to the already discounted price:

$100 item
40% sale       -> $60.00
10% VIP code   -> $54.00

Total discount: 46%, not 50%

That gap works in your favor. But stack three or four discounts and the final number can still land far deeper than anything you would approve on its own. Before you turn anything on, model the worst-case stacks on your top 50 to 100 SKUs and check the final price on every one.

What this replaces after the Scripts shutdown

When Scripts shut down on June 30, Plus stores lost the custom logic that could layer discounts on a single line item. Rebuilding that behavior meant writing a Shopify Function. This July release puts the capability right in the Shopify admin, no Function required.

Check your MAP exposure before you enable anything

Stacked discounts are exactly how a compliant price quietly turns into a MAP violation. For parts merchants and anyone else selling under MAP agreements: if the worst-case stack lands below MAP on any SKU, remove that combination from your compatible groups. And remember that your pricing is increasingly on the record; agentic carts track price history, so a below-MAP stack does not stay quiet.

Where stacking actually wins

Used well, this is a real opportunity. Loyalty plus clearance clears old inventory: your best customers get first crack at end-of-line stock, and you get the warehouse space back. And affiliate codes that combine with seasonal sales give influencers a reason to promote during your promo periods instead of sitting them out because their code stopped working.

Shopify now lets you stack discounts. On July 15th, Shopify ships support for multiple product discounts on the same item. Here's how it works and where it can quietly eat your margin.

Same-item stacking showed up on Plus first, so if you don't see tagging options in your discount settings yet, check availability on your plan.

Now, the math. Stacking is not additive. It's applied linearly. A 40% sale plus a 10% VIP code is not 50% off because the second discount applies to the already discounted price. A $100 item lands at $54. That's 46% off, not 50.

Why does this matter now? When Shopify Scripts shut down June 30th, Plus stores lost the custom logic that could layer discounts on a single line item. This July release puts that capability right in the Shopify admin without having to write a Function.

Before you turn it on, model the worst-case stacks on your top 50 to 100 SKUs and check the final number on each one. And if you sell under MAP agreements, watch for any combination that lands below MAP. If one does, remove it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you stack multiple discounts on the same item in Shopify?
Yes. As of July 15, 2026, Shopify supports multiple product discounts on a single item. You assign tags to your discounts, choose which tagged groups are allowed to combine, and compatible discounts apply automatically at checkout. The feature reached Shopify Plus first, with availability expanding by plan.
How does Shopify calculate stacked discounts?
Linearly, not additively. Each discount applies to the price left after the previous one. A 40% sale plus a 10% VIP code takes a $100 item to $60, then to $54. That is a 46% total discount, not 50%. Model final prices before enabling any combination.
Which Shopify plans support same-item discount stacking?
Shopify rolled same-item stacking out to Plus stores first. If you do not see tag options in your discount settings, the feature has not reached your plan yet. The underlying API shipped to developers on April 30, 2026, and the admin release followed on July 15.
What replaced Shopify Scripts for layering discounts?
When Scripts shut down on June 30, 2026, Plus stores lost custom checkout logic that could layer discounts on one line item. Rebuilding it required writing a Shopify Function. The July 2026 release brings tag-based discount stacking into the Shopify admin with no code required.
How do I keep stacked discounts from violating MAP agreements?
Model the worst-case discount combination on every SKU covered by a MAP agreement, usually your top 50 to 100 products. If any combination prices an item below MAP, remove it from your compatible groups before enabling stacking. Recheck every time you add a new discount or promo period.
No pitch. No pressure. Just perspective.
