As AI agents and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools become standard for commerce, merchants must ensure their product data is accessible to these new interfaces. At Ambaum, we recently conducted a technical test using OpenClaw on a Mac Studio to audit how Shopify products interact with the Shopify Catalog MCP and the Catalog API.
By deploying powered by Claude 4.6, we developed a specialized Skill to verify if live products are actually visible to AI models. The results revealed a critical configuration gap that many Shopify Plus merchants may be overlooking.
The Technical Audit Process
Our specialized OpenClaw Skill performed a deep-dive analysis of merchant stores through the following steps:
- Header Analysis: Identifying the unique merchant shop ID from store response headers.
- Sampling: Selecting a random sample of 100 live products from the storefront.
- Cross-Verification: Checking each product against the Catalog API REST endpoint.
- Agent Validation: Spawning sub-agents to double check any misses against the Shopify Catalog MCP.
The "Ghost Product" Discovery
During our testing, we found that 7% of the sampled products failed to appear in the Shopify Catalog MCP. Despite being visible on the web storefront for browsing, these products were invisible to AI tools and the Catalog API.
The investigation identified a specific cause: products with zero inventory and the "Continue selling when out of stock" setting toggled OFF are treated as unavailable by Shopify’s backend infrastructure. While a standard theme might still render these pages, the API layer enforces stricter rules. If a product cannot be purchased, it is excluded from the AI-accessible catalog.
Actionable Strategy for Merchants
To ensure your products remain visible to AI models and search agents, Shopify merchants should prioritize the following:
1. Enable Overselling
Where possible, enable "Continue selling when out of stock." This keeps the product active within the Shopify Catalog MCP even when physical inventory hits zero.
2. Inventory Configuration Audit
Conduct a full audit of your inventory settings. Identify products that are intended for display but are currently restricted by "out of stock" logic.
3. API Visibility Testing
Verify that your products are not just visible to human users, but are also being indexed by the Catalog API. This is the primary data source for the next generation of AI-driven shopping experiences.
If you are unsure if your catalog is AI-ready, Ambaum can help you run a technical check to ensure your products stay visible in the evolving search landscape.
