Buyers are skipping the search bar and asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity what to buy. If your Shopify store is not optimized for those answers, you are invisible in them. The fix is AEO: Answer Engine Optimization. Not sure where your store stands? Our Agentic Commerce Audit will tell you exactly what needs fixing. Either way, here are the five moves we recommend to every merchant.
1. Make Your Product Content AI-Readable
AI search engines do not rank pages. They synthesize data to produce direct answers, and they can only cite what they can understand. Keyword stuffing and copy-pasted supplier descriptions give them nothing to work with.
- Write product descriptions in a conversational tone, the way you would explain the product out loud.
- Highlight use cases. Say clearly who the product is for and what problem it solves.
- Use hard facts: exact material specifications, dimensions, and weight.
- Follow Shopify's guidelines for structuring product data and technical details.
2. Implement Rich Schema Markup
Structured data tells LLMs exactly what your product is, without guesswork. Make sure JSON-LD schema is active for products, offers, breadcrumbs, and your organization. Each product should expose its current price, SKU, brand, and aggregate review scores. Many themes ship with partial schema; audit it rather than assume it works.
3. Build Intent-Based Collection Pages
A collection page titled Office Chairs gives an AI model nothing to summarize. AI favors query-driven results, so structure collection pages around specific buyer situations and problems. Think Best Ergonomic Office Chairs for Lower Back Pain, not a generic category label. The page that matches the question wins the citation.
4. Cultivate Detailed Reviews and Third-Party Consensus
AI models synthesize data from across the web to judge brand reputation and product reliability. A wall of five-star ratings with no substance does not help you. Collect authentic, detailed customer reviews that mention specific features, use cases, and benefits. That language becomes raw material for AI answers.
5. Check Your Technical Settings
Your store's technical settings can make or break AI discoverability. Review your robots.txt file and firewall settings to confirm you are not unintentionally blocking AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. If the bots cannot crawl your site, nothing else on this list matters.

ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI are already recommending products to buyers. Here are five things your Shopify store needs to show up.
Tip one, write for people, not search engines. Delete the generic supplier copy. Describe who the product is for and what problem it solves. Use a conversational tone and highlight real use cases. AI models synthesize your words into purchase recommendations, so give them words worth citing.
Tip two, lead with hard facts: exact dimensions, materials, weight, and compatibility, not as keywords, but as clear, readable content. A product page that says premium quality gets overlooked. One with precise specs and technical details gets recommended.
Tip three, add rich schema markup. JSON-LD schema tells AI crawlers your product name, price, SKU, brand, and review scores. Without it, AI models are guessing at what your product is. With it, your store becomes a trusted first-class data source.
Tip four, rename your collections around buyer intent. An AI cannot recommend office chairs, but it can recommend best ergonomic office chairs for lower back pain, because that matches what people actually ask AI models.
Tip five, build your review base. AI models use third-party consensus to judge brand trust. Reviews that mention specific features, use cases, and measurable outcomes get cited as evidence. Make it easy for customers to write them, and make sure they are detailed.
