You can add Shop Pay to BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Adobe Commerce, Magento, or a custom stack without migrating your storefront. Here is what you actually get, what you still own, and when it is not the right move.
Replatforming is not the only way to borrow Shopify’s checkout conversion. Shopify’s Shop Pay on any platform product (Shop Pay Wallet) lets non-Shopify merchants put a Shop Pay button on an existing checkout, tap a network of 250M+ shoppers, and keep catalog, cart, tax, shipping, and inventory on the stack you already run.
That is not the same thing as “Shopify Payments bolted onto Magento.” You still need a new Shopify conduit store, Shopify Payments eligibility, and a Wallet API integration. We already covered the portable thesis at a high level in Shopify Payments vs. Shop Pay. This piece is the merchant operating brief: responsibilities, eligibility, fees, competitive framing, and when to say no.
Shop Pay is not Shopify Payments
Two products, one brand family.
- Shop Pay is the accelerated checkout and Shop identity network (vaulted addresses and payment methods, one-tap return buyers, Shop app order tracking).
- Shopify Payments is the processor that settles Shop Pay transactions. Off Shopify, Shop Pay Wallet runs through Shopify Payments on a dedicated conduit shop.
If you only remember one distinction from our earlier Insights post, keep this one: portable Shop Pay does not give you the full Shopify Payments feature set on your Magento or BigCommerce storefront. It gives you the wallet, the network, and Shopify-side payment and order records.
What “Shop Pay on any platform” actually requires
Official Help Center language: you can add Shop Pay to an existing commerce platform without migrating to Shopify. The integration path is Shop Pay Wallet (JS SDK plus Storefront API payment-request sessions).
Here is the catch merchants miss in the marketing deck.
- Create a new Shopify store as a conduit. Shopify.dev is explicit: you cannot use the Shop Pay Wallet API on an existing Shopify Online Store shop for this product. Merchants who already sell on Shopify still need a new Wallet store for off-platform checkout.
- Qualify for Shopify Payments in an available country or region, with the same prohibited-business gates as native Shopify Payments.
- Collect customer email before payment so Shop can recognize returning buyers.
- Integrate via Shop sales channel credentials (Shop ID, Client ID, Admin and Storefront API), verify your external storefront domain (DNS TXT), and allow-list JS SDK origins in the Shop sales channel.
- Reconcile. Shopify becomes source of truth for payment transactions and Shopify order or fulfillment records. You push tracking back so Shop app notifications work.
If your team lacks API capacity, Shopify’s Help path assumes you may hire a partner. That is a real cost line, not a one-click App Marketplace install. Prefer “integrate Shop Pay Wallet into your BigCommerce or Magento checkout” over implying a native one-click BC app unless you have verified one.
The numbers (dated, not guaranteed)
Use Shopify’s wording carefully. Soften both “50% higher” as a guarantee and any “number one payment processor” framing.
- Network size: 250M+ shoppers in the Shop Pay network (prefer “shoppers / network,” not unverified “accounts”).
- Conversion vs guest: Shop Pay can convert up to 50% higher than guest checkout (study with a Big Three global management consulting firm, April 2023). Not a merchant SLA.
- Vs other wallets: at least 10% higher than other accelerated checkouts in that same study; about 5% lower-funnel lift from merely offering it.
- Speed: about 2.5x faster than guest checkout; about 7 in 10 Shop Pay orders on mobile (2026 Shop Pay data; prefer over older “~4x” marketing).
- AOV: about 16% higher AOV on Shop Pay ($119.37 vs $102.65) per 2026 Shop Pay data.
- Scale signal: Shop Pay GMV +53% YoY; lifetime accelerated GMV surpassed $400B in June 2026 (Shopify Q2 2026 earnings).
Case studies worth naming without over-claiming: FragranceNet.com (custom / non-Shopify) saw +3.4% conversion and +7.5% new customer acquisition in one month after adding Shop Pay, with roughly eight weeks to integrate. Alice + Olivia ran Shop Pay on an existing checkout ahead of a Salesforce-to-Shopify move; Shop Pay was 35% of orders in 2026.
Shopify markets Shop Pay as a top-converting accelerated checkout, not as the “#1 payment processor.” At Ambaum we use the study language: #1 converting accelerated checkout when we cite the Apr 2023 Big Three result, always with “up to 50%” and the study date.
What Shop Pay provides vs what you still own
From Shopify.dev’s responsibilities table for Shop Pay Wallet:
Shopify / Shop Pay is source of truth for
- Customer addresses and payment methods (vaulted Shop Pay data)
- The payment transaction (Shop Pay via Shopify Payments)
- Shopify order and fulfillment records (you must reconcile and push tracking)
Your system remains source of truth for
- Cart contents
- Discounts, rewards, and promotions
- Shipping methods and rates (and pickup)
- Taxes
- Inventory
That matches the practical thesis. You keep the storefront, cart and checkout logic, catalog, shipping, and tax. Shop Pay adds accelerated payment, Shop identity, Shopify-side order and payment records, and Shop app tracking once fulfillment is synced.
Included on any-platform setups (Help Center): Shop Pay button on PDP, cart, and checkout; Shop Pay Installments for eligible customers in CA, US, and UK (default in those markets, additional transaction fees); order tracking in the Shop app after you update fulfillment in Shopify.
Fees, Installments, and Protect caveats
- Shop Pay itself is marketed as free with Shopify Payments (no separate one-click fee). Processing still runs through Shopify Payments rates.
- Public US online Shopify Payments card rates (Basic / Grow / Advanced) are a starting point only. Wallet / conduit plan rates can need Support configuration. Do not paste plan tables as definitive for Wallet without admin confirmation.
- Shop Pay Installments add merchant fees. Exact percentages are not always listed in Help. Confirm in admin before promising BNPL margin.
- Complete payout details within 21 days of the first Shop Pay payment or payments can auto-refund to the customer. Slow finance onboarding is an operational risk.
- Shopify Protect is US Shopify Payments, Shop Pay orders, physical shippable goods, with strict fulfill-and-tracking rules. Installments are not eligible. Help examples for other platforms often cite Meta / Google. Do not promise Protect for Wallet web checkout until you confirm eligibility with Shopify or your partner.
How Shop Pay compares to Apple Pay, PayPal, and Amazon Pay
Offer multiple accelerated options. Shop Pay’s differentiator is the cross-merchant Shop identity network (250M+) plus Shop app post-purchase, not a claim that it beats Apple Pay by X% on your specific BigCommerce theme.
- Apple Pay / Google Pay: device- or browser-bound wallets. Strong where OS wallets already dominate.
- PayPal: large account base and international trust; different fee structure.
- Amazon Pay: familiar Amazon credentials; treat older case-study lifts carefully.
- Link by Stripe: cross-site saved cards for Stripe merchants.
Framing for your roadmap: OS wallets win on device familiarity. PayPal and Amazon win on their own identity graphs. Shop Pay wins when your buyers already shop across the Shop network and will recognize the purple button.
When Shop Pay off Shopify fits (and when it does not)
Good fit when
- You run a non-Shopify or hybrid stack and control checkout front end and back end
- A meaningful share of your traffic already uses Shop or Shop Pay elsewhere
- Mobile cart abandonment at form entry is a known leak
- You want to test Shopify conversion economics before (or instead of) a full replatform
- Higher AOV where Installments may reduce sticker shock (US / CA / UK)
Poor fit when
- Your business type or country is ineligible for Shopify Payments
- You cannot staff API integration, webhooks, reconciliation, CSP updates, and fulfillment sync
- Complex B2B approval workflows, heavily configured SKUs, or “must review before pay” categories dominate
- You need Shopify-native capabilities that are not Shop Pay (multi-currency payouts, Tap to Pay, the full Payments feature set on a Magento storefront)
- You are unwilling to have Shopify process payments, hold vaulted payment SoT, or appear in the Shop app
- Dual-processor contracts constrain how you can route accelerated checkout
Brand control note: the checkout popup is Shopify-hosted Shop Pay UX. Button size and radius are configurable; the Shop purple stays. You can set brand assets for the popup header and Shop app, but you are not redesigning Checkout Extensibility on Magento.
GEO and AEO: trust signals without overclaiming agentic storefronts
Buyers and agents care about recognized payment identity, clear merchant-of-record continuity, fraud vs legitimate automation, and post-purchase trackability. Shop Pay helps on wallet recognition and Shop app tracking.
Do not overclaim. Full Universal Commerce Protocol / Agentic Storefronts enrollment is a stronger story for Shopify Online Store merchants. For Magento or BigCommerce plus Wallet, the portable win is still wallet recognition and conversion, not automatic ChatGPT or UCP enrollment. For the Shopify-native agentic path, see our ChatGPT integration guide and Universal Commerce Protocol pieces.
What to check before you commit
- Confirm Shopify Payments eligibility for your entity and country.
- Budget a new conduit Shopify store (not your existing Shopify shop, if you have one).
- Map source of truth: cart / tax / ship / inventory stay with you; payment and Shopify order records move to Shopify.
- Scope Wallet SDK work: domain verification, origin allow list, webhooks (
ORDERS_CREATE,ORDER_TRANSACTIONS_CREATE), reconciliation job, fulfillment push for Shop tracking. - Model Installments fees separately if you sell into US / CA / UK.
- Decide whether Protect is in scope only after eligibility is confirmed.
- Keep Apple Pay / PayPal / Google Pay in the button row. Shop Pay is additive, not a religion.

Shop Pay is no longer just for Shopify stores. If you run BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Adobe Commerce, Magento, or any non-Shopify platform, you can add Shop Pay at checkout without a full replatform.
The pitch is straightforward. More than 250 million shoppers in the Shop Pay network. Shop Pay can convert up to 50 percent higher than guest checkout in a April 2023 Big Three study. One-tap checkout across devices for returning Shop buyers, plus order review in the Shop app.
What Shop Pay provides: payment processing through Shopify Payments, order record and transaction history on the Shopify side, fraud and risk tooling tied to Payments, and Shop app order tracking when you sync fulfillment.
What you still own: your storefront, cart, and checkout; your product catalog and inventory; shipping and tax.
If you are considering Shop Pay on your current stack, reach out to Ambaum. This is a way to tap Shopify’s top-converting accelerated checkout and buyer network without an entire replatform event.
